It is very common that those who adopt a cat in a shelter or directly from the street are unaware of the specific age that the new family member may have. Know the age of a small cat

A cat is considered a puppy from birth to the year of life. Small cats are especially fragile and vulnerable and should not be exposed to the outside until the feline vaccination schedule is updated, mainly to prevent the spread of any disease.

At this stage they will start in socialization and will need very specific care to survive. Among them we can mention the feeding, the temperature or the management of the sphincter. At the end of this stage is when we should start teaching our cat to use the scraper and sandbox.

Calculate the age of an adult cat

Adult cats are those that are found between the year and seven years old. At this stage the cat has already passed the process of socialization and begins in sexual maturity, which can lead to marking in male cats and the first heat of a cat.

This is the perfect time to consider sterilization, something we should consult with our trusted veterinarian. The adult cat, although it can remain playful, begins to have a more stable behavior.

  • From the first year of age: By observing the denture we can observe a slight dulling of the teeth as well as the appearance of tartar. It is the perfect time to start caring for your teeth
  • Between the second and third year: It is usual that at this stage we observe even more tartar in the cat's teeth, however, sometimes it can be difficult to observe, especially if we have performed dental hygiene or if the previous owner performed it.
  • Between the fourth and seventh year: The teeth begin to wear out and the accumulation of tartar is very evident, in addition, their gums begin to pigment.

Know the age of an old cat

Elderly cats often show a much more relaxed lifestyle. It is estimated that they reach this stage over seven or eight years, but even over this age some may seem very young and be active, it will depend on each cat. Although yes, elderly cats spend more hours sleeping and resting and usually begin to suffer from typical diseases of age such as loss of vision, kidney problems, muscle pain.

It is very important to be clear about the care of the elderly cat, since it will need a specific diet, a comfortable place to sleep and even pain in its limbs.

  • Between seven and ten years: The cat begins to become lazy and it is common for the pigmentation of the nose or gums to continue moving forward. The first diseases of age also begin to appear, but at first glance it still looks like a normal and healthy adult cat.

With this age, the kitten has:

  • You will have all the baby teeth that are 3 premolars in the upper jaw, 2 canines in the upper and two in the lower, and 6 incisors both in the upper and upper.
  • Your behavior will be typical of a puppy, that is, it will not stop still until it is> 2 to 3 months old.

I hope it is easier for you now to know how old your kitten is 🙂.

First month

These animals are born with folded ears and closed eyes, but after only two days you will see that his ears begin to peel off. Your eyes will open a little after six days, but it will not be until approximately 15 days that you will begin to keep them fully open.

With two weeks they will begin to walk, although in a very uncoordinated way. They will stagger 🙂, but two weeks later they will have learned to remain stable, to coordinate their movements.

Between the third and sixth month

During these months what we will have at home will be a miniature version of an adult cat, although with the character of a puppy. The final teeth will start to come out, he will walk and run, and will do the typical pranks of a feline of his age.

With six months the cat will have all its definitive teeth, and it is likely that he will begin to be zealous.

Adult cat, between 1 and 10 years old

While we might think that a cat who has just turned one year old has already finished growing, the truth is that it is not so. These animals they will not reach their final size until 3-5 years Depending on the breed. They are adults, yes, but they still have to "take body."

Once they are 3-5 years old the teeth will be a little opaque or with tartar. It will have clean fur, although if it has been on the street it is likely that it will not shine. You may have some disease.

A 5 to 10 year old cat will show somewhat worn teeth. This wear will continue until the end of his life, unless steps are taken to take care of his teeth. Also, you should know that will become increasingly sedentary.

Senior cat

Senior cats are those who are 10 years or older. The most characteristic of these animals is the fur: they will start to be less careful, maybe with knots. In addition, the teeth will have very worn, with a lot of tartar. At this age, you will need someone to take care of you more than ever.

We hope you have been helpful and can, from now on, know how old a cat is 🙂.

How to know the age of a cat puppy

Let's start with the newborn cats>

Some are physicists like the ears, the eyes, the teeth and the way they walk. Others are from behavior such as the desire to explore, lick or respond to external stimuli. That way you will know how many days or how many months does a cat have. Let's see them:

1 day old cat

When a newborn kitten is only 1 day old, his ears are folded and glued to his head. They also have their eyes completely closed, so they can't see. Naturally, they are not even able to walk and practically cannot stand on their legs. You should also know that cats are born without teeth. Therefore if you detect these symptoms already you know how old the cat is. You may be interested: how to know if a cat is male or female.

3 day old cat

A cat that is 3 days old still has its eyes closed. His ears start to peel off and not be so bent. They begin to move a little more but without walking. They only eat and sleep. A newborn usually weighs about 70 grams on average and usually gains about 15 grams of weight every day.

Cat with 7 days old

As of the seventh day the eyes of the kitten puppy begin to open a little, but not quite. His ears are almost separated and pointed, but they are still unable to hear anything or respond to sound stimuli. They start to move and crawl a bit (like when a baby crawls).

Cat from 10 to 13 days old

From the tenth day the feline puppy can already have its eyes completely open, although its pupils do not dilate, you will see a very thin black stripe inside. That is if a kitten still has his eyes closed he will have less than 10 days. Also its mobility, although reduced, is increasing.

2 week old cat

Finally the kittens begin to walk but in an uncoordinated and unstable way. From the second week on, the first teeth can begin to come out to the kitten, specifically the first ones to leave are the incisors, which will grow until they are fully visible. But it's not strange that some people start dating in the third week. To look at his teeth, you will have to lift his lips very gently and gently. You might also be interested: why a cat purrs.

3 week old cat

From the third week the animal begins to explore its surroundings with curiosity. He walks better and is able to learn to find his sandbox to do his needs (pee and poop). They can also start digging and removing the sand to cover their droppings. They react to sound stimuli since their ears are fully open and ears raised. Canines can also begin to appear in their teeth.

4 week old cat

By the fourth week or month of life the cats begin to play with each other by making fictitious fights and pouncing on each other. Although a little awkward, they already do jumps and races and even the bravest begin to climb.

This helps them learn how to coordinate their movements to try to escape, defend or persecute. In the same way they will be able to start taking and tolerating certain semi-solid foods that complement their diet. You may also be interested: why my cat vomits.

5 week old cat

On the fifth week of life the personal hygiene or self-cleaning starts, that is, they start licking their bodies (You can see why my cat licks me). They also use signals and orders to warn each other in case of danger. Similarly at this age, they have practically developed all their senses.

6 week old cat

This is the time, at six weeks, that is, a month and a half, to gradually wean the breast. This way you can be with her a few times but you can start eating dry food to take her to her new home (you can see why my cat does not eat).

Remember that at this age kittens already need a special diet to meet their needs. Similarly, his eyes begin to change color, from blue or light to the color they will have the rest of his life. In his first month and a half of life, in his teeth, in the lower jaw the premolars will come out.

Cat with 8 weeks old

At two months of age, a healthy cat puppy should weigh approximately 900 gr to 1000 gr (1 kilo). Naturally, this depends on the type of race. With this time they are very cute since they look like an adult cat but in miniature.

Cats reach their adult size in about a year. Although some races do not complete their growth until four, as in the case of the Maine Coon. At 8 weeks of life, the pussycat will have all its baby teeth full. Canines, incisors and molars, or what is the same, 26 dental pieces.

We remind you that in case of doubt or that you do not have complete security, it is always advisable visit the vet. He will help you determine the age of your pet feline and the care it requires.

From this point know the age of a cat exactly It becomes a little more complicated, but not impossible. You have at your disposal some systems to find out. We will see it in more detail in the following sections.

How to know the age of an adult cat

The first thing you should know is that, by definition, is>

A female cat You can have the first heat between 7 and 12 months of age (you can see how to know if my cat is pregnant). Instead the male cats It can be sexually mature between 9 and 12 months. Naturally, these are the general norm, but there may be small exceptions.

All veterinarians and pet experts agree that the best way to know the age of a cat is analyzing your teeth. It is undoubtedly the most accurate and reliable system to calculate at what stage of your life you are. Let's see this and other methods:

Know the age of a cat by dentures

Cat with 2 or 3 months : how could you read in the previous section, after 2 months of life, young cats have 26 baby teeth or temporary. They must have 12 in the lower jaw and 14 in the upper jaw.

Cat with 6 months : these "baby" teeth will fall and be replaced by the definitive between 3 and a half months and 4 months of age. First the incisors and so on. Under normal conditions, the cat will have his final denture at 6 months. They will be white and very shiny.

Cat with the final teeth. They are white and bright.

1 to 2 year old cat : the teeth of cats at this age they start to have some tartar especially in the back teeth. They are also already with a slightly more dull tone and with a certain yellowish color.

3 to 5 year old cat : The denture has already more tartar attached, especially in the molars and at its base, where the tooth leaves the gum. In the same way a certain general wear begins to be noticeable.

5 to 10 year old cat : at this point in the vital stage of a cat Your teeth have obvious wear and may even have some dental disease. It is also not strange to observe certain pigmentation in the gums.

Cat with more than 10 years : a cat whose age passes 10 will always have a marked wear on his teeth. The tartar will be present in all or almost all the pieces and it may even be missing some that have fallen.

Adult cat with tartar and yellowish teeth

Despite being the method to calculate the age of a cat more recommended, it is not infallible, since there are cats that can suffer early wear of their teeth or suffer from oral diseases. You can see: how to know if my cat has a fever.

Other felines may also have a genetic load (depending on the breed), which makes them more prone to accumulate more tartar. Also, if a cat has lived outdoors it will have worse teeth than one that has always been in a comfortable home. As usual, your vet will be by your side to help you.

Find out the age of a cat by the hair

A cat, throughout its life, presents variations in their fur. That is, it undergoes a series of changes in the hair that can you help us discover your age approximate

When a kitten is newborn has a short and quite thick hair, even as a kind of lanilla. With the passage of time, as it grows, the fur becomes thinner and much softer.

Normally, from the age of 9 or 10, when a cat is already beginning to be a little old, its hair again has a denser and thicker appearance. In the same way, the color of its coat begins to present gray or dark tones in certain parts. You might also be interested: why cats are said to have 7 lives.

Calculate the age of a cat by muscle tone

It is easier than it seems to be. Young cats have a good muscle tone since they are much more active. If you touch them by squeezing a little notes that the muscles are hard and brown.

Instead the oldest cats they have a feeling that they are more bony and flaccid in general and more notable in the shoulder blades and in the back of the neck.

In addition, you should consider if a cat is domestic or stray (you can see the origin of the domestic cat). If a cat lives in the street it can age faster than that of a domestic mammal, even up to double.

How to know how old a cat is by its behavior

From the biological point of view, It can be considered that a cat is an adult or that begins its decline from 8 years of age. Once this age is over and in the following years, as a general rule, the felines lower their activity level significantly.

This means that they will sleep more and more and get tired faster. Although they still like to play, run or explore, each time they will do it less frequently. Something similar to what happens to dogs (well see how old a dog lives). You must pay attention to their habits.

Elderly cats sleep more and have little activity.

The signs with which you begin to recognize that your cat is already beginning to be old It is because of the hours of sleep and rest they do. Also your joints begin to have some stiffness and sometimes your eyesight and hearing deteriorate.

At this time is when you should give your cat much more comfort and make things easier. For example, it is easier for a cat to reach his favorite place in the window if you place a ladder so he can get close.

Older cats need more heatBe sure to give your older cat a warm place. Similarly, an elderly cat has a different metabolism, so he will also need a special diet formulated based on his age.

Know the age of a cat by its eyes

Other method to calculate the age of a crawl is Look at his eyes. In small cats, at a young age, the iris of his eye is smooth. As they grow and over the years the iris becomes more irregular.

Elderly cat with cataracts

On the other hand, if you notice that inside the eyes of a cat There is a kind of veil or semitransparent cloth, which is as blurry or detective that does not look good, you may have waterfalls. This is a sign that the cat may be over 10 years old, since from this age it is common for them to develop this condition.

The time has come for them to open their eyes and begin to explore their surroundings, however they are not able to correctly control their movements and usually crawl on their bellies.

As time goes by, they increasingly begin to maintain balance. They will seem very tender, but they will still need breast milk and special care.

1 month after birth

Although you can perceive slightly deficiencies to coordinate their movements, you already start to feel interest in the game and you will see how it develops some typical behaviors such as the hunting instinct and application of its own hygiene.

15 to 20 years old

At this age we will usually have a feline companion a little sick, product of the evils of his species, in addition, the appearance of gray hair will show in his hair his advanced age. The nails begin to grow disproportionately and we will see it with an impaired appearance.

Remember that the above is only a guide to decipher the age of a cat, but it is always recommended that you go with your companion animal to the veterinarian so that he can guide you about the state of health, indicate the approximate age of your cat and necessary care for your pet.

It can be difficult to know how old your cat is if you didn't have it since it was born, you adopted it already with a certain size or you found it on the street.

It is useful to know approximately your age in order to provide adequate care and attention. Your veterinarian can help you determine how much time you have approximately, but here we leave you a small guide so that you can do it yourself!
Let's start with the puppies. You know that in spring / summer they start to appear litters of kittens from all sides (like "Little Monkey" that was found under a car). The easiest is to determine the age of young kittens based on the early signs of development:

1 day old : The ears are bent, practically glued and the eyes closed. Of course, they are not able to stand on their legs.

3 days old : They start to peel off their ears and not hang so much.

Little Monkey 8 days

6 days old : The eyes begin to open a little.

The two eyelids open very often with a difference of two to three days. The ears will also open, but the kittens will not be able to hear anything. They will start to crawl.

10-15 days old : The eyes are fully open, but the pupils do not dilate.

Two weeks old : The kittens begin to walk, although in a very unstable and uncoordinated way.

Three weeks old : They begin to react to auditory stimuli because the channels of their ears are completely open and the ears are raised. They start to walk better, and are able to use the sandbox. Your baby teeth start to come out. By the fourth week they can start taking solid foods.

Little Monkey 5 weeks

Fourth and Fifth Week of Age : The games between kittens begin to be harder, they pounce on each other in fictitious fights.

It also starts the car wash or personal hygiene. Each time they are more stable in their careers and jumps, they can start climbing.

Six weeks old : The eyes of the kittens will begin to change from blue to their permanent color.

Eye color change in AKIRA 8 weeks

Change of eye color in AKIRA 4 weeks

Eight weeks old : The weight of the kittens (depending on races) will be around 900gr, 1 kg. They will be like a miniature version of an adult cat.

Let's talk about cat teeth:

At 8 weeks old , your kitten will have all baby teeth, incisors, canines and molars. Between three and a half months and four months The final teeth will start to come out. At 6 months , the cat will have all its bright white adult teeth.

Between the first and second year the teeth begin to be a little opaque and slightly colored or with some tartar on the back pieces.

Between 3 and 5 years The teeth usually have more tartar attached to the gum line (especially the molars) and wear begins to be visible.

Between 5 and 10 years The teeth have a noticeable wear, even some diseases and there is usually a visible pigment in the gums.

Between 10 and 15 years old The teeth are worn, have a large amount of tartar and lack of parts is common.

Most kittens will reach their adult size by 1 year of age. Some cat breeds such as the Maine Coon can continue their growth up to 4 years.

Hair changes

SORA + 10 years

When a kitten is born, it usually has thick and short fur. As it grows, the hair becomes softer and thinner.

When a cat reaches senior age (from 9 years old), the hair again becomes thicker and denser and usually turns gray in certain places.

Changes in muscle tone:

Younger cats will have better muscle tone because they are more active. Older cats will be more flaccid and bony in the rump and shoulder blades.

It is said that a cat that lives outdoors ages twice as fast as a cat that lives in a house.

For a 14-year-old cat that lives in freedom, its age would be equivalent to about 120 human years while for a cat that lives in a house it would be equivalent to about 72 years of ours.

In the mouth basically, but usually also in the quality of the hair as we explain in the article, when they are seniors the skin of the head seems to be more stuck and the bones and eyes are more noticeable ... in short almost as it happens with the Humans.

Greetings, I recommend correcting "puppies" ... that term is only used in dogs, in cat it is "kitty" (not only is the diminutive, it is also referred to offspring)

Last week I adopted my boyfriend and I a street cat. We think that he is already an adult because he only sleeps and does not do much physical activity, his fur is thick and somewhat flaccid of the muscles, although we believe that this is because he lived on the street and did not eat well. For the data they give in the article, I estimate that it is about 2 years old, almost 3, for its somewhat stained teeth and the presence of tartar. But hey there's nothing like taking it to the dentist for review.
Thank you very much for the information!!

Thank you very much for the information, I have 6 cats at home ,,

Hello good afternoon, I need urgent help !!
Two days ago I found some kittens on the grounds of my chalet in the mountains, the mother was from here on the ground but it was wild and we saw her pregnant, and it turns out that the other day, we heard meows of young ... We jumped the plot where the meows came and, indeed, there were three kittens next to the mother who was dead, because of the smell she gave off, she could tell she had been dead for a few days. Well then we took the three kittens and I stayed in my house, but two have died and I'm just trying to get the kitten that is left alive. I bought today special milk for cats for baby kittens. I don't know his age so I'm giving him a few doses every x time of short intervals…. He has his eyes open, and walks dragging his legs a little, moves very slowly and only does more than sleep…. I would like someone from this forum to advise me what I should do so that I do not die, please. Somebody help me I am totally disoriented in that, since when I had cats they were adults, and their young were in charge of feeding them…. I'm desperate…. Thank you very much in advance!

Almudena Diaz-MIguel

The main thing is that you keep it warm and you have to feed it every 3 hours. Ideally, you should take her to the vet for a review.
