Surely you will have heard that cats have seven lives, maybe it is true or maybe not, but one thing is for sure, your cat can have a long and healthy life with proper care. There are many things to consider if you are going to take care of a cat and we will discover it in the different sections of this article.

How to choose a cat?

Before adopting a cat, you should find out what kind of cat is the most convenient For you and your family, for example, you may ask yourself:

  • Better a newborn cat or an adult cat?
  • Do I prefer a longhair or shorthair cat?
  • Better adopt a male or a female?
  • Do I prefer a breed cat or is that not important to me?

If you already have an idea about the size, age, sex, breed and / or the appearance of the animal you want to adopt, we recommend that you do some research on the characteristics of the cat that you hope to adopt, since, you may be surprised and see that the animal will not fit with your lifestyle. For example, if you want the house to be quiet, the Siamese will not be the best option, since they are cats that tend to meow often. Similarly, a Persian is beautiful to look at but requires brushing his fur daily if you don't want to have a house full of hair.

Better a newborn cat>

Everyone loves newborn kittens as they are cute, fun and cute, but don't make the mistake of taking care of cats as "babies." By the time a kitten is ready to separate from his mother, he can walk, run, jump and climb like the feline equivalent of a ten-year-old boy, moreover, in just a few months you will have an adult cat in House.

The cat is an excellent companion animal, affectionate enough to live in family and independent enough to endure at home only in the hours when you and your family are out, but if you opt for a newborn kitten, you should consider that in the first months of life demand a lot of attention. Small kittens need attention and company to create an affable personality and get used to family life.

It is also important to know that, as a general rule, very young children and young cats do not usually get along very well. It's nice to think that a boy and a ten-week-old kitten can "grow together" and take care of each other, but it doesn't really happen that way. In six months, the little ball of hair that your child could carry and carry everywhere will have grown and weigh about 5kg. Your child probably wants to continue caring for and playing with the animal and the awkward way of treating him or her as a child, for example 4 years, scares or bothers you.

Do I prefer a longhair or shorthair cat?

Think well if you prefer a cat with beautiful long hair, a shorthair cat or on the contrary, a hairless cat like the well-known sphinx cat. To do this you must keep in mind that taking care of a long-haired cat will require your attention very frequently, since you will have to brush it or the house will be full of hairs, especially the sofa, clothes and beds.

A shorthair cat will also require brushing and will also release hair at home, but the amount of hair will always be much less and the frequency in brushing can be spaced twice a week except in the time of molt.

If you don't want to have to brush your cat, the sphinx cat is your best choice. The sphinx cat is a breed of cats that has such a thin coat of hair, that at first glance it seems that it completely lacks hair.

Better adopt a male or a female?

This choice will depend on how you want to interact with your cat since males and females have different behaviors. As a general rule, cats tend to be more affectionate than cats, but they are also more jealous if they see their owner interacting with other cats. Although males tend to be more independent, this does not mean they do not need to receive your love and attention, surely they will approach you when they need it. Males are slightly larger than females and your cat probably has a more aggressive and abrupt behavior than if you had a cat.

On the other hand, there is the issue of the time of zeal in cats. Males who are not castrated and in a time of zeal will put their sexual instincts before any other priority. A male in heat who cannot go outside will be nervous and irritable. The cats will also be restless at the time of heat and begin to meow to attract other cats. For the reasons stated here, castration of the animal is a very important point to enjoy our cat.

Do I prefer a breed cat or is that not important to me?

Millions of homeless cats end up being slaughtered in animal shelters every year because they don't find someone who wants to take care of them conveniently. When you want to acquire a cat, think that adoption in a shelter saves a life, leaves room for another cat and is also the cheapest way to get a pet that will already have vaccines. It is important that if you choose to take a cat from a protector, make sure you see that the facilities and conditions of the adoptable animals are good.

Other people adopt cats that they find abandoned in the street. If this is your case, the first thing you should do is take your cat to the veterinarian to vaccinate and deworm.

If you opt for a purebred cat, you can look for breeders in your area. Good breeders of breed cats are very knowledgeable about the needs of cats in general and those of the breed they breed in particular. Watch carefully with "bargains" and breeders who only want to make money without caring about the animal's health.

Cat feeding

The saying "You are what you eat" is as true for cats as it is for humans. Feed your cat with a quality diet and you will have a healthy cat. As in human food, you can find tasty treats for cats good for your health and junk food. Sometimes, opting for a less healthy snack should not do any harm to your cat, but do not make it customary.

Can my cat be a vegetarian?

The wild ancestors of the domestic cat were hunters and therefore, our cat retains that instinct. It is likely that your cat will ever bring you a bird or little mouse that has hunted, this behavior responds to its most primitive instincts and you can feel proud that I offer it to you, it is your way of thanking you for what you do for it. You will also see that instinct when the animal pounces on a fluff, a rat-shaped toy or when it chases the pointer of a laser.

If you have doubts about whether your cat is carnivorous by nature, check out its teeth the next time it yawns. Those fangs are not designed to eat alfalfa sprouts.

The fact is that your cat is as carnivorous as a vegetarian, that is, it needs a diet that includes both. There are certain nutrients found only in the animal proteins your cat needs, such as an amino acid called taurine, vitamin A or arachidonic acid. Without taurine, cats can go blind and develop an enlarged heart.

Nor should you feed your cat with dog food, since the needs of one animal and another are different and your cat may not be receiving adequate nutrients if you feed it with dog food.

That your cat needs meat, does not mean that you must feed it with raw meat or let your own food be hunted, since, the lifestyle we have given these animals for hundreds of years would not allow them to live solely on meat and with a little developed instinct.

Plants to purge and feed

If it is green and grows on the ground or in a pot, chances are that your cat will try to eat it. This need of your cat is particularly worrying if the plants in question are your houseplants or worse, if they are poisonous to him.

Many cat owners understand this custom as a behavior problem. The idea of these people is that if the cat is eating the plants it is because it is not receiving enough food in its diet. In a way it is true, the main reason that the animal eats plants is because it needs more vegetables in its diet.

According to experts, cats feed on plants to:

  • Get nutrients not found in meat
  • Help digestion
  • To help expel the hairs they eat when eating

Regardless of the reason, the case is that your cat needs to eat vegetation and will do so by instinct. So, the best thing you can do is channel that instinct for the animal to eat plants specially planted for it.

Cat snacks

A well-groomed and fed cat does not need to bite between hours. Snacks or dules too frequent will have the same effect on your cat that they can have for you: unhealthy weight gain and an unbalanced diet.

Of course, it is difficult to resist the temptation to give your cat a sweet once in a while, and there is nothing wrong with it as long as it is not a daily custom. How much time you should leave between a snack and another will depend on your cat and the type of candy you give it. If you see that your cat starts to get fat and that the diet he receives is correct, probably the reason is that you give him too many snacks.

Water for your cat

Your cat needs about 50 to 100ml of water for every kilo of weight, which will be about 2 liter of water a week for a normal build cat.

The main source of obtaining water for cats is when drinking, but there are other important sources of water. By eating, your cat will be hydrating, for that reason, the animal ingests more water than it seems.

If you don't get enough water, your cat may suffer from dehydration, which presents a serious problem for any living being and cats are especially prone to it. A cat may be without food for days, losing up to 40% of its body weight and still survive, but a loss of body water of only 10% can kill it.

The solution so that your cat is hydrated and perfectly cared for is simple, check once a day that he has water in his drinking fountain.

Homemade food or purchased food?

The best thing about a homemade meal is that you know exactly what ingredients you have used and that they are of quality and healthy, however, when it comes to caring for a cat, it is better to let feline nutrition experts prepare the bulk of the Your cat's diet

The development of a balanced diet for a cat is not simple since meals must contain specific amounts of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Different types of animals, including people, need different proportions of protein, fat and carbohydrates in their diets. In addition, the proportions change as the animal ages. A newborn kitten has different nutritional needs than an adult cat, and both have different needs than an elderly one. Most companies that manufacture pet food have special formulas for different age and activity levels, there are even special diets for cats with health problems.

How to take care of your cat's hair?

Have you ever wondered why some cats seem to always be elegant and beautiful. While it is true that some cats are born with good hair, usually cats that look pretty hair is because they are well cared for and the owners devote time to that aspect.

Except when we want to eliminate a strong tangle or by a medical procedure, there is no other reason to cut a cat's hair. Cats are prepared to have a layer of hair and if the thickness of hair is varied it can alter the regulation of their body temperature. Slightly cutting the fur of a long-haired cat to avoid tangles is fine, but a professional hairdresser who knows how much hair you can cut and how to do it should do so.

Cats with long hair and short hair

The magnificent hair of a Persian cat is a true work of art, but it should be borne in mind that it has taken hours of regular preparation for its owner to obtain and maintain it that way. It is common sense that the more hair the cat has, the more work and care it needs. The thick tangles of hair can be painful when combing and even damaging a cat's skin.

It is not that short-haired cats do not need regular care, but the dedication they need is less and also the frequency of brushing. A short-haired cat that cleans itself can often compensate a lazy owner with the brush and comb, however, in long-haired cats you will not get rid of combing your animal on a daily basis.

Cats use their tongue and teeth for personal grooming, but each time they start their contortionist bathing routine, they swallow hairs. As the hair is not digested by the organism of the animal, it can accumulate in the stomach and intestines of a cat forming hairballs. In general, hairballs are not usually dangerous for the animal, so don't be scared if you see your cat regurgitate hairballs. In severe cases, ingested hair could block your cat's intestines, in which case you will need to be visited by a veterinarian to determine if a surgical intervention is necessary.

Do I need a professional hairdresser?

Since long-haired cats need regular care, sometimes once a day, you may want to ask a professional for a quote. Even so, you should have your own tools to take care of your cat's hair at home and know how to use them, since sometimes the animal can get nervous if something is entangled and you have to attend to it at that time.

The main advantages of a professional hairdresser are training, skills and experience. A good hairdresser can get your cat's fur to be fantastic quickly and without the animal suffering. Even people with dexterity taking care of their cat's fur decide to take the animal to the feline hairdresser at times.

Tips to take care of your cat's hair at home

  • Try to enjoy the time you spend taking care of your cat's hair and make it fun. Most cats love to be petted and enjoy the feeling of grooming. It is a good way to create bonds of fellowship with the cat. When you go to take care of your cat's hair, approach your cat in a friendly way and insert the toilet with some extra affection.
  • Brush it gently. Do not try to force your cat to remain seated or remain in an awkward position.
  • You may not be able to leave your cat ready in a single session. If the animal gets tired of its grooming, finish it at another time. It is better to spend 4 pleasant sessions than a long and tortuous fight.
  • Seek professional help if your cat has a tangle that you are not able to remove. If you force a tangle you may end up damaging your cat's skin. It can also be interesting if you don't get your cat to stay calm when you take care of her hair. Take advantage of the visit to ask for some advice and learn the basic techniques of the hairdresser.

The care of your cat's hair is only the first part in the grooming of the animal, in the next section, we will see some tips for bathing your cat.

How to bathe your cat?

Generally, the cat does not need to receive periodic baths to stay clean but, sometimes, a bath is necessary to treat a flea infestation, clean a cat that has escaped to undertake an adventure through the mud, treat a skin disease or Eliminate a hard mess that can damage your cat's skin.

Some people prefer to leave this work in the hands of a professional hairdresser for fear or lack of experience. For those who want to try it at home, here are several basic bathroom concepts:

Prepare the bath before catching the cat. You will need a good shampoo for the cu

When caring for a cat, it is as important to keep it clean and care as it keeps you awake, entertained and active. Something as simple as threads or strings can turn the quieter cat into a live and playful cat. If you normally use threads and ropes for the game, be careful that the animal cannot access them when you are not there since it could suffocate or swallow them and cause intestinal obstruction. A cat that gets entangled in a rope can panic and get injured while trying to escape.

Cats will turn anything bright, wrinkled or small enough to hit a toy on the floor. Always think that your cat will hold those toys with his mouth and could swallow them, so they must be things that cannot be suffocated or poisoned. In cases where the cat swallows a foreign body and enters the digestive system, it can cause vomiting or diarrhea and sometimes worse. For that reason, try to keep things like paper clips, foil and / or rubber bands away from your cat.

Cellophane candy wrappers are especially dangerous. Cats cannot resist their wrinkled texture and the sugary residue invites them to swallow it. Paper wrappers that wrap candy can get rid of your cat's stomach, cover the mucosa and block the absorption of nutrients from food.

What toys are safe for my cat?

You can buy specially prepared toys for your cat in animal stores, but if you wish, you can turn anything into a toy that:

  • Anything that is resistant and can be thrown, gnawed, scratched, hit, kicked or licked, can be a good toy for your cat.
  • Try not to have moving parts or small parts that can be easily separated.
  • Plush dolls with felt pieces glued on it.
  • Plastic mesh balls with bells inside are one of the most popular cat toys.
  • Avoid toys where you can take out or peel a part of it or the decoration.
  • A tennis ball that the cat can chase.
  • There is nothing more fun than watching the cat go crazy chasing a laser pointer around the house. Never point the animal's eyes directly with the pointer.

Visits to veterinarians and vaccines

One of the most important points when caring for a cat is its health. Having a good veterinarian to whom you can go regularly for routine visits and in case of emergency is very important. The choice of a veterinarian for your cat is similar to the choice of your doctor, you will look for someone attentive to their patients, with good knowledge and who understands the needs of your animal.

Find a veterinarian

If you have just adopted a cat, have recently moved to a new area or need to find a new veterinarian, you can search the yellow pages, online or ask a friend or neighbor. You should not be afraid to take your cat to a veterinarian that you do not know, think that any veterinarian has studied specially to treat animals and must comply with strict rules to obtain a license that allows him to practice as a veterinarian.

Once you get a referral from a veterinarian, stop by your consultation to see the facilities and meet the doctors. Be demanding, but don't be discouraged if the veterinarian or clinic staff can't spend much time with you to answer all your questions. If you have many questions about it, it is best to request an appointment and offer to pay for it.

Cat Vaccination

He care of a cat It happens to update the vaccination calendar. Most vaccines allow the animal to develop antibodies against a virus by inoculating a weakened strain of the virus. The animal's body attacks these weak viruses and learns to defend against them when the powerful virus enters the body. This works exactly the same in vaccines for humans.

Vaccines protect your cat from common diseases usually caused by viruses. When a virus invades an animal's body, there are no medicines that can kill it. Viral diseases have to run their course and when they get over it, the victim becomes immune for life. Vaccines provide your cat with the benefits of becoming immune to the disease without having to suffer its symptoms.

A vaccine cannot cure the disease caused by a virus, so if your cat has not been vaccinated and is infected with a virus, the vaccine will not cure it. No vaccine is 100 percent effective, so every now and then a cat who has all his vaccinations a day gets sick with something he is supposed to be protected from. On the other hand, there are some diseases, they deactivate the animal's immune system, therefore, even if your cat was vaccinated against them, it would be of no use since the immune system cannot act.

Cats should be vaccinated against rabies and distemper. The combined vaccine usually carries protection against feline distemper (panleukopenia) and common upper respiratory diseases such as feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and chlamydia. Vaccines can be given by injection under the skin or in the muscle or as an aerosol administered directly into the cat's nostrils.

Any cat that is vaccinated for the first time will need a series of vaccines spaced several weeks apart. For newborn kittens, these vaccines begin at seven or eight weeks of age and continue until four months.

Rabies vaccines are given only once at three months of age and for adults of any age. Vaccines for other cat diseases have been around since the mid-1980s, in particular, the feline leukemia virus (FeLV) vaccine. FeLV or FeLeuk attacks the white blood cells of a cat's blood and can cause leukemia in the animal.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (IVF) and feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) are also fatal diseases for the cat caused by viruses. There are laboratory tests for detection, but the tests currently used for FIP can give inconclusive results. There are vaccines for IVF and FIP, but veterinarians still do not agree on their effectiveness in preventing disease transmission.

Your veterinarian can help you determine if your cat is at risk for these diseases and if the potential benefits of vaccinating it outweigh the risks.

Deworming

It will also be very important to follow a deworming schedule, which will consist of deworming it internally every 3 months and applying a monthly pipette. If you plan to leave your cat in the garden, it will be very important that you offer this care to prevent fleas, ticks and mosquitoes from reaching it. Discover some home remedies to deworm a cat in Animal Expert.

Spay or neuter

Finally it will be useful to ask our veterinarian about the sterilization of our cat. It is important to understand that most of the abandoned animals come from unwanted litters, something very common in this species. In addition, neutering a cat has many advantages, such as a stable character, the assurance that he will not leave in search of adventures and that we will avoid suffering during the heat.

Adult cat education

Although it is not so common to find information about the education of a cat, the truth is that it is a very important factor since it will depend on it enjoy a good coexistence. Adult cats have already passed their socialization process, but it is still important to reinforce it regularly with visits from other people at home that encourage the cat to have a sociable and open attitude.

The education of the cat should always be based on positive reinforcement: caresses, treats and affectionate words will help you understand that you have done something correctly. Of course, you must avoid punishment at any cost.

What things should we teach him?

Among the things we should teach our cat, we will highlight that we should teach our cat to use the sandbox so that the environment of the house remains hygienic at all times. These are very clean animals that will soon understand what you are proposing. It will also be basic to teach you how to use the scraper if we do not want to observe how it destroys our most appreciated furniture.

Cat body hygiene

Although cats are animals clean by nature, it is very important to spend time helping you in the care of your fur, it will depend on it being bright and healthy.

It is essential that your cat has a trunk, utensil or scraper at its fingertips so that its nails are sharpened. If you do not have it, remember that you can do it on any other type of surface, such as a sofa. You must cut them when you estimate They have reached a considerable size. If you are afraid to do so you can go to the veterinarian who has the obligation to do it for free.

Teeth

It is very important to take care of the adult cat's teeth to make sure that when you get your old age, keep them. Although it is difficult to brush a cat's teeth, there are many tricks and tips that will help you keep your mouth clean, without germs or tartar. To start in the market we find "treats" for cats with that function but we can also help you by offering dry feed instead of wet food. Discover more ways to clean a cat's teeth in Animal Expert.

Brushing

Cats spend whole hours grooming their cloaks. His tongue is really rough so he is able to remove dead hair Very easily. For this same reason, cats can suffer the accumulation of hairballs in their stomach, which in the long run, can lead to serious health problems. If we suspect that our cat may have accumulated hairballs in its stomach, we must resort to malt for cats, a product that helps the evacuation of annoying trichobezoars.

To avoid this problem we must brush our cat two or three times a week, although the frequency of brushing will really vary depending on the type of coat, the amount of hair lost or if they are in a time of shedding. Cat molting usually occurs in spring and autumn and it is at this time that we must pay more attention to their care.

Although generally cats do not require regular bathsSometimes they may need you to help them be totally clean if they have become heavily soiled. Cats should get used to water since they were little, since if not, they usually end up being afraid of the bathtub.

If this is your case, you can follow our tricks to clean a cat without bathing it:

  • Baby wet wipes are ideal for cleaning small surface spots.
  • Use a sponge soaked in warm water for the most serious cases.
  • Get dry cleaning foam to clean your cat thoroughly without having to wet it.

However, if your cat enjoys the water and is happy to splash whenever you open a tap, do not hesitate to know the appropriate step by step to bathe a cat at home, paying attention to the products and advice mentioned.

Adult cat feeding

The cat should receive appropriate food for his condition and health status. It is very important to consider the different types of food that exist before we get one. But whatever we choose, it must always be of quality. Some specific types of feed are:

  • Normal meat meat
  • Normal fish feed
  • Organic food
  • I think for giant cats
  • For allergic cats
  • For obese cats
  • For cats with stomach sensitivity
  • For sterilized cats
  • For the hairballs
  • For dental health
  • For health problems (specific)

In principle we should feed a cat with I think drydaily since it acts as a sanitizer for your teeth. This type of food should be the basis of their diet as it provides all the necessary nutrients for our feline. The recommended quantity appears on the product's own container according to the cat's weight.

On the other hand, in summer, as a whim or if we observe that our cat does not drink water, it will be advisable to offer wet food for cats as it will provide extra hydration (they also love it). However, it encourages the accumulation of tartar, so it will be important not to overdo it and offer it only occasionally.

There are also vitamins, supplements and a wide range of foods that you can provide your cat as an extra to improve

Fun, socialization and mental stimulation

There are cats of all kinds, some more independent or more sociable, others more playful or calm. All of them must perform physical and mental activities daily. That is essential to have a healthy and happy cat.

We must know that cats do not have fun if they play alone (or at least for extended periods of time), so it will be very important to get various toys for cats (the most recommended is the duster) and that we interact with him encouraging him to play .

Do not forget that although the adult cat has an already defined character it is important to continue working with him socialization (with people and elements of the environment) that will help him to be an animal capable of relating well with the environment and our guests. Encouraging visitors to offer you treats or food will be excellent to foster a desirable attitude in our feline.

The sandbox

When the cat becomes an adult he goes to his litter box instinctively and does not realize his needs outside of it.

Gracias por la información

Gracias a ti Rafael 😉 ¡Un saludo!

. Greetings and thanks.
